Comparison of mobile food vendors in Lawrence, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo.

By Michaela Warren

Lawrence, Kan., is a college town with no food trucks. It will cost $750 to start a food truck in Lawrence compared to $532 in Kansas City, Mo. In Kansas City food trucks use the public right-of-way, which allows the food trucks to use street locations to sell food. However, Lawrence does not allow food trucks to use the public right-of-way, but requires food trucks to sell food from private property with permission from owners and with a time limit of three hours at each spot. Trying to find a spot to sell food in Lawrence is difficult because of no use of public right-of-way and not being allowed to sell in neighborhoods; however, one can open a mobile food truck if he or she wants.
